During the month of March, Meals on Wheels San Francisco will join more than 250 other Meals on Wheels programs across the country to recognize the historic achievement of the Older Americans Act (OAA) which created the foundation for a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. The OAA was established in 1965 and later amended by president Nixon in 1972. For more than 45 years, these critical programs – commonly referred to as Meals on Wheels – have delivered more than just nutritious meals to homebound seniors in virtually every community across the country. The dedicated staff and volunteers who deliver these meals each week provide a vital lifeline and connection to the community, which are sometimes all it takes to keep our older adult neighbors at home, where they want to be.
The 18th annual March for Meals campaign gives businesses, organizations, city leaders, and volunteers who contribute so generously in their communities, an opportunity to support homebound older adults through providing life-saving resources, advocacy, and social interaction. By helping older citizens live independently in their homes and decreasing their social isolation, we are making our community stronger and healthier.
About San Francisco's March for Meals Champion Day
Every year, we rely on volunteers from the corporate community to deliver up to 600 disaster kits to low-income seniors who live in the Tenderloin and SoMa. The majority of these seniors live alone and on less than $1,000/month. Please join us on March 24th to make sure no senior is forgotten and all have the supplies they need to live safely in their homes during an emergency!
Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2019
Shifts are one hour in length, starting at 10:00 AM with the last route at 12:00 PM
Thank you to Zendesk for hosting!
